Map Recycle #1

Anyone that works in tourism or publishing knows there's a lot of recycling to do each year. Our beautiful Cape Breton Artisan Trail map is out for 2011 which means there are some of last years to recycle. Rather than head straight for the blue bags I challenged myself to think of something else to do with this paper. It's finally gardening season so here's the first project... easy peasy rolled up tubes filled with soil.

I used a few more to create a drip tray for underneath the tubes and 24 fit just nicely inside. Rolled up another one to use as a funnel to make filling them up easier.
And there you go, 24 tubes of soil all planted up with sunflower seeds for a start to my flower garden.
The last date for a chance of frost in Cape Breton is usually June 15th. Thats the date when it's safe to plant even the most tender of plants like tomatoes. Before that you're taking chances unless you know the plants have been hardened off. So, it may seem late to be starting seed but it's about the same time as I did last year and success followed!
I'm letting a couple of other recycling ideas percolate but if you have suggestions I'd love to hear them!

Such a great idea. Especially with cucumbers and other veggies that get transplant shock when replanted in the garden. Each year I start more and more seedlings in eggshells. Like your newspaper pots, so easy for kids too. Both provide good moisture retention for germination and the obvious environmental and monetary advantages.
